Setting your Social Media Goals

Understanding the WHY, before you learn HOW

#1 We’ve previously touched on the importance of getting in front of the camera, but let’s recap!

Think of your favorite business or brand, do they have a consistent presence? It is easier for people to relate to, and build a relationship with a person or a face, rather than just a business.

Let’s use Skims as an example:

  • We know that Kim Kardashian is the founder but our relationship with her extends beyond her title.

  • For almost every launch, Kim uses IG stories and TikTok to example each item through try-ons and other methods highlighting each specific piece.

  • Sometimes she shows clips of the items hanging in her closet, creating the feel for her audience that we’re getting the insider look into the Skims process.

  • By humanizing her brand and her content, we feel as though we have a relationship with the brand through her, we can even imagine what the pieces would look like hanging in our own closets or even on our bodies out for dinner or drinks.

Influencers use a similar parasocial relationship to help us, the audience, feel like we know them. When you think of your favorite influencers, can you recognize their voice? Do they have a consistent tone or behavior that you could pinpoint blindfolded?

Think about why those familiarities affect you. When influencers share their opinions, it helps you resonate with them and relate to them. If you didn’t feel comfortable with, or trust that influencer and their voice, it wouldn’t interest you, would it?

Compare this to going to coffee with a new friend. If you knew nothing about them, and still after meeting them you felt like a stranger with no insight into who they are, you would walk away feeling like you don’t know them at all!

We are less compelled to put time into people who don’t want us to know them. By opening your life, even if it's just a glimpse, you are creating a friendship and a confidence with your viewers.

#2 We understand that this isn’t always easy, so how can we get comfortable on camera?

Here are some of our best tips:

  • Start small!

    • The best thing you can do for yourself is just show up. Start by positioning the camera and taking B-Roll footage of yourself without talking…and post it anyways!

    • We have a lot of experience with clients who record themselves and end up unhappy with how they look. Take it from us, 99% of people will never notice your insecurities or the minor missteps you pick apart. We are always overly critical of ourselves, but with practice our confidence grows!

  • Try practice runs!

    • Record yourself talking to the camera, even if it ends up in your “recently deleted”, get comfortable with the sound of your own voice and practice speaking directly to yourself.

  • Script your content!

  • Make a list of talking points beforehand so you can be clear and concise in your delivery.

  • Work your way into voice overs!

  • This allows you to script your content post-recording without worrying about fumbling your words or restarting the same clip too many times.

  • Start talking on your stories!

    • Some people feel better in this capacity knowing that stories are only up for 24 hours.

    • Use this space to practice your imperfections and treat the camera like a friend.

    • This can also translate into TikTok which has an even more comfortable feel.

      • Examples:

        • Taking the camera along in a day in your life

        • Talking to the camera while you get ready in the morning

        • Posting your journey through your new favorite recipe, burnt pans, messy dishes and all!

Your audience wants to know you, they want to see this side of you! By being open to this, you are creating your own narrative and simply inviting your viewers to come along for the ride.
